Have your protein about half an hour to an hour before starting a workout for best results.

I did heavy weight training and bodybuilding type workout for 2-3 hours every single day. After my weight training sessions I did steady state cardio for 10-15 minutes and usually aimed to burn 200-300 calories on the treadmill. Right after my cardio, I went to the sauna for sweat out some water weight and repeated this every day. I weighed myself at night and day, always aiming to be lighter than the day before. I took pictures to motivate myself , and kept pushing , dropping my calories down every now and then. My beginner diet was chicken breast and rice mostly . When trying to build more muscle, you will need to eat more in general. You ideally want to consume what it takes to increase your weight by a weekly pound. Investigate ways to raise your caloric intake, and if after two weeks you see no change in your weight, consider taking in even more calories.

Stay active on your rest days. Being active increases your blood flow, and will help you to recover more quickly. The activity can be as simple as going for a walk. You can also go swimming, biking, or even get a massage. Engaging in these kinds of activities is significantly more effective than simply lying in bed all day.

If you want to optimize your muscle building ability, make sure to eat something after a workout. Eat within an hour of finishing your workout. Ideally, your snack or meal should contain a protein and a carbohydrate. This food will get your body started doing the things it needs to do to start building muscle.
